MMatapacos was a stray dog living on the streets of Santiago, Chile, until he became friends with a human named Maria in 2011. Maria was a chocolate vendor with a soft spot for the many stray dogs on the streets of Santiago. However, she and Matapacos had a special bond.

Maria had already taken in as many stray dogs as she could financially support. Nevertheless, she still made leave to give food and water to a stray black dog that would greet her on the street. She would even knit him sweaters when the weather got colder.

Then one day, when she got off at the bus stop in front of her house after work, Matapacos was already there waiting for her. She was shocked that he had found his way to her home. Eventually, she gave in and he never had to sleep on the street again. She knew he was a special dog from that moment, but she had no idea of the great things he would go on to do.

Matapacos would go out during the day and return home every night. Maria assumed he was out exploring. She had no idea that he was out fighting for social equality in one of the biggest political movements the nation had seen.
